Why college is life in a nutshell
A common phrase used among college students is “I can’t wait to finish my degree and start living my life” and who can blame us for thinking like that. With all the assignments, what appear to be pointless criteria’s hatched by the devil in his lab of torture and torment, trying to balance school with making and maintaining friendships and finding that special someone and keeping them. It can get pretty overwhelming and lead us to believe that getting to the finish line is the ultimate fulfillment of it all.
Today though, while running from one class to a group meeting and thinking about what I could whip up to eat fast enough to run to another activity, it occurred to me; college comes at you fast. So fast that it’s hard to imagine that it could be a part of the real world, when it’s actually the best training ground for the real world a person could ask for, a sort of dry run if you will.
Reason #1: Stressing over deadlines and assignments, along with our fellow colleagues as the consequences of failure hovers like a dark cloud. Whether you go into corporate life, private, public or sole proprietorship this will be a reality that you need to prepare yourself to face now.
Do we really believe that real life entails getting a degree and then making it work for you so you don’t have to? That real life entails, throwing on your best professional outfit and marching into your dream job to your dream desk and watching all those dollars just roll in? That real life eases up so that we can pursue all our hobbies on the side, take vacations to spend time with God and pursue a fulfilling relationship with that special person? I hope not, because if we do, we’re not only setting up our selves for major disappointments, but we’re setting ourselves up to be mowed over by life.
Reason #2: Learning to live with noisy roommates, whose interests and sleep patterns differ from yours. Once you decide to have a family of your own there’s no escaping it. Learn to live harmoniously with others now, it’ll benefit you in the long run.
Life at college isn’t to experiment with everything you won’t be allowed to do as an adult, but rather it’s a time to grow into the adult you desire to be. Time spent at college is valuable experience worthy of your résumé, it is where you develop character, work ethics and professional goals that guide you afterward. It is where a man becomes the husband he’s always desired to be, it is where a woman becomes the wife she’s always desired to be, it is where we become leaders others are proud to follow. It is not where we flounder in our faith, but where our faith blossoms, it is where friendships and networks that last a lifetime are formed.
Reason #3: You have to make a conscious decision to spend time with God even in the midst of your busy schedules. While helping others to do the same.
So pay attention guys, if we get these three to four years right, we would have set ourselves up for success in that jungle we call the real world. Because it’s not going to get less taxing but it will increase in intensity, now we are only working for an A, then we’ll be working to keep our monthly incomes. The conclusion of the matter my friends is that college is life in a nutshell, use it wisely.
Be a blessing,
